Mehndi Hand Art

(source)
Mehndi Hand Art
Activity: drawing
Materials: drawing paper, sharpies

Background: We did this activity in conjunction with the 7th grade unit on Islam. Mehndi is an activity traditionally done by groups of women throughout the Middle East and parts of Africa to celebrate life events, such as weddings or births. See the slide presentation (here) for further information. Our discussion was definitely enriched by the handful of students in the class who had participated in Mehndi with their families and shared their experiences with it.

Activity: Using the sharpie on the drawing paper, have the students trace their hand(s). Then they can decorate as they wish. The last 3 slides give specific ideas, but the main idea is to do patterns or paisley or nature shapes, with lots of repetition.
