"Happy Butterfly Day" 1955, Andy Warhol
Meet the Artist: Andy Warhol was a prominent 20th century pop artist. (Here is a great little video from the Tate Modern Museum, which would be great to show the kids...) One of the techniques he used in his drawing series is called the BLOTTED LINE TECHNIQUE, which is a printmaking technique that allows an artist to primitively reproduce a drawing. In this lesson we'll be using a modified version of that technique to create a butterfly painting inspired by Warhol's "Happy Butterfly Day".
Materials: watercolor paper, black tempera paint, paint brushes, dixie cups, and watercolors
Activity: Pass out a folded sheet of watercolor paper (Landscape direction, folded in half like a book). Review the shape of a butterfly on the board - and then have the kids start to draw butterflies with the tempera paint on one side of their paper. After they ink in each butterfly, have them fold the paper over and rub, to create a rudimentary print. Keep going - draw a butterfly, then press - until their paper is covered with butterflies. The more the better! By the time they finish drawing/printing all the butterflies, the first ones should be dry enough to begin adding watercolor paint on top of the tempera.
